Alumni Program Highlight: Disability Empowerment Series

Being an adult with a disability comes with its own set of questions and challenges, and many times, the best place for support and answers is from others in similar life circumstances.

YC’s Disability Empowerment series is a virtual monthly alumni program that empowers adults with disabilities by connecting them with their peers and other disability resources. Alumni meet on Zoom to discuss various topics related to living with a disability, such as employment, dating, independent living, disability advocacy, gratitude during difficult times, and travel. This monthly program empowers alumni to help, give each other advice, and support one another. It also gives alumni chances to hear from guest speakers, including former YC Trustee and Ms. Wheelchair Ohio Krista Allison and representatives from the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities and We Thrive Together.

“Many of our alumni struggle with loneliness,” said Sara Steimle, Alumni Program Coordinator. “This program really gives a chance for our alumni to share their experience, struggles, the good, the bad, the successes, and advice with each other as someone that lives with a disability.”

The Disability Empowerment series not only offers practical advice but also builds a strong sense of community among participants. By discussing real-life challenges and successes, alumni gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of their own journeys. The support network created through these monthly meetings is invaluable, providing a safe space for individuals to express themselves and feel understood.

This program underscores the importance of peer support in overcoming the isolation that many adults with disabilities face. By fostering connections and providing a platform for open dialogue, the Disability Empowerment series helps alumni develop stronger, more resilient networks. These connections are vital for building confidence and promoting independence.

YC’s Disability Empowerment series empowers alumni participants to live fuller, more connected lives, ensuring they have the support and resources they need to thrive.
