STEM-tastic Highlight
We had an amazing group of participants and volunteers from the East Side join us for our new STEM-tastic program at the Shaker Heights Library! Over the course of three Mondays in January, we delved into the exciting world of STEM through engaging games, exercises, and hands-on activities.
During our first program, the spotlight was on “Exercise and the Circulatory System.” The day kicked off with participants and volunteers immersing themselves in a STEM mindset through a series of building and testing activities. From the intricate Snap Circuit to the creative possibilities of Legos and the challenge of constructing a K’nex rollercoaster, everyone embraced the opportunity to explore engineering concepts, foster creativity, and strengthen teamwork skills.
The Snap Circuit, a highlight of the day, provided a platform for builders to create projects on a circuit board, offering a hands-on experience in engineering principles. Legos became a canvas for imagination, as builders crafted projects either following books or allowing their creativity to run wild. Meanwhile, the K’nex rollercoaster challenged participants to follow detailed instructions, promoting the practice of patience, teamwork, and honing engineering skills. Some participants even took the initiative to design and construct their own unique projects using the K’nex pieces.
Later in the program, the focus shifted towards hands-on experiences related to the circulatory system. Stations were set up for participants to practice taking their own heart rate, create makeshift stethoscopes, and test their strength. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as both participants and volunteers actively engaged in the activities, fostering a love for learning through movement and discovery. We look forward to more Mondays filled with exploration, creativity, and learning as we continue to uncover the wonders of STEM together!
