Board Member Carl Segura & Son Bryce Team Up in YC Basketball
Board Member Carl Segura has decided to jump into the frontlines of YC’s mission, and team up with his son Bryce in doing so. Carl is volunteering as an assistant coach during basketball programs. His 12-year-old son, Bryce, is a brand new YC volunteer.
“I don’t want to just sit and watch, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I just wanted to help,” Carl said, “I offered to clean the bathrooms, I’d do anything. I’m going to be here anyways, so whatever I can do to help out.”
Program staff decided that Carl would be best as an assistant coach for the Bluepers team. As an assistant coach, Carl helps in any way that he can—whether through an encouraging word, a high five or helping a participant put on their pinnie.
“As a board member, you feel like you have an impact,” Carl said. “But getting to see the programs in person and getting to help out? It’s kind of why I wanted to be a part of Youth Challenge and why we’ve supported for years. It’s rewarding.”
His son, Bryce, has enjoyed laughing with, shooting hoops with, and getting to know his participant partners.
“Once you get to know them, they can be good friends,” Bryce said.
Carl loves being able to witness his son helping others.
“I feel like parents feel proud when their kids are volunteering for anything, whether a soup kitchen or volunteering at Youth Challenge, but to see it up close—that’s a really cool thing,” Carl said.
Participants and volunteers have learned and practiced skills like passing, defense, dribbling and shooting during the first three weeks of practice. During the fourth week, they had a scrimmage to determine the first, second, third and fourth seeds for the upcoming Basketball Showdown on March 8 at St. Peter School. (Tipoff is at 5:15 pm.) As fate would have it, the Bluepers (Carl’s team) and Midnight Ballers (Bryce’s team) are the first and second seed and will be facing each other in the Championship Game.
“It’s going to be high energy, it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Carl said. “I think anyone who comes to this event is going to have their eyes opened to what these guys can do.”
